How to Use a Pregnancy Test and Read the Results Accurately
A pregnancy test strip is the simplest, quickest way to test for pregnancy at home. But how you use it matters: used incorrectly, it can give a false result.
What is a pregnancy test?
A pregnancy test is a qualitative test that detects the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced by the placenta and appears in a pregnant woman's urine.
hCG is known as the "pregnancy hormone" because it is only produced after an egg has been fertilized. Levels of this hormone rise very quickly after fertilization, and both urine tests and blood tests rely on it to tell whether you are pregnant.
How to use a pregnancy test
According to Dr. Bui Phuong, a pregnancy test works well as long as it comes from a reliable source, is within its expiry date and is used according to the instructions.
Testing at home: you can use a pregnancy test at any time of day (at the earliest, once your period is late), but it is best to use your first urine of the morning. Some highly sensitive tests can detect pregnancy before your period is due, but the result may not be accurate.
How to use the test:
- Step 1: Collect urine in a cup.
- Step 2: Tear open the foil pouch containing the test.
- Step 3: Hold the test with the arrow pointing down.
- Step 4: Dip the test into the cup of urine, making sure the urine does not come above the arrow.
- Step 5: Wait 5 minutes, then read the result.

Test results.
After 5 minutes, a pink line will appear on the test to show that it has worked. If a second pink line appears below the first, you are pregnant. If no second pink line appears, you are not pregnant.
Avoid drinking a lot of fluid before testing, as it can dilute the hCG in your urine.
High accuracy: many home pregnancy tests claim to be about 99% accurate when used correctly from the day your period is late. Incorrect results only occur in a few cases, such as when the test is past its expiry date, has not been left long enough (at least 5 minutes), has not been used according to the instructions, or is fake or out of date...
If you have used the test according to the instructions and tested 2–3 times or more, you can trust the result. Read the instructions carefully and check the quality of the test before using it.
Inaccurate results usually come down to the following:
- Testing too early.
- A poor-quality test: expired, damaged or used incorrectly.
- An unsuitable urine sample.
- Having a vaginal infection at the time of testing.
- Taking other medication at the time of testing.
Common questions about pregnancy tests
There are lots of questions and confusion about testing for pregnancy at home:
When I tested my urine to see whether I was pregnant, I saw a pink line on the test, but it disappeared after a few minutes. Am I pregnant or not?
A line that disappears from the test usually means a negative result: not pregnant. To be sure, though, take another test to check.
When I used a pregnancy test, at first there was only 1 line, meaning I wasn't pregnant. But after leaving the test for an hour, I saw another pink line appear on it.
In your case, there are two possibilities. First, you may be pregnant but your hCG level is still low. Second, the pink line that appeared on your test an hour later may simply be due to evaporation or a reaction with chemicals in the environment. So to get an accurate result, test again to be sure.

Pregnancy test.
What should I do if my test is negative (one line – not pregnant) but my period has "disappeared" for almost 2 months?
Be patient and wait another week, then test again with a new pregnancy test. If the second test is still negative and you still haven't had a period, see a doctor soon. A late (or missed) period can be caused by other conditions.
A pregnancy test with one strong line and one faint line
According to obstetricians and gynecologists, if your test shows one strong line and one faint line, don't rush to conclude that you are pregnant. There are four main reasons for this:
- First: you may be pregnant, but because the pregnancy is still very early and hormone levels are not yet high, the test shows one strong line and one faint line rather than two clear lines.
- Second: you tested too early, or at an unsuitable time of day. At that point, the level of β-hCG in your blood and urine is not yet high enough to reach the test's detection threshold, so it shows one strong line and one faint line.
- Third: you didn't use the test according to the instructions – you were in too much of a hurry to read the result and took the test out before the stated number of minutes, so the result didn't have time to show clearly.
- Fourth: you used a poor-quality test, which gives a negative result or one strong line and one faint line, leaving you confused.
Signs that you should take a pregnancy test
A late period
Most women's menstrual cycles last about 28 days. So if your period is a few days late, you can take a test to see whether you are pregnant.
Note: sometimes the menstrual cycle can be disrupted by stress, dieting, exercise or other medical issues.
Cramps
When the egg implants in the wall of the uterus, it can cause a sensation similar to period cramps.
This can be a sign of pregnancy, so if you experience it, take a pregnancy test.
Sore breasts
Your breasts become tender and larger due to increased blood flow under the skin. This also helps prepare you for breastfeeding.
Other signs
In early pregnancy, a woman's body produces more estrogen and progesterone.
These hormones cause many changes in your body to support the baby's development, which is why you get what is commonly called morning sickness, including:
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Tiredness.
- Needing to urinate frequently.
- Craving or being put off by certain foods.
- Mood swings.
Are pregnancy tests accurate?
If you test too early, the result may be a false negative, so if you don't see two lines but your period is still late, test again in about a week. Many women wonder why their test shows two lines of different strength, with the second line very faint. This is because hCG levels are still low and you tested just as the embryo was forming.
