Why Is 8 March Celebrated, and What Does It Mean?

Every year, as soon as March comes around, gift shops and florists are buzzing with a flood of orders ahead of 8 March.

So why do we have 8 March, and what does the day mean?

Why Is 8 March Celebrated, and What Does It Mean?

International Women's Day has its roots in the United States, the world's number one nation. In the late 19th century, a protest movement of textile workers demanding equal rights emerged, sounding the alarm for women's equality.

A widely repeated story says that on 8/3/1857 textile workers in New York protested for better working conditions, but historians have found no records confirming that this event took place.

Many years later, on 8/3/1908, more than 10,000 women in New York City once again marched through the main streets, demanding higher monthly wages, shorter working hours and an end to child labour. Thanks to the passionate efforts of American citizens, the Socialist Party of America declared 28/2/1909 as Women's Day for the first time.

The 2nd Women's Conference was held under the chairmanship of Clara Zetkin (from Germany), with 100 delegates from 17 countries around the world, to discuss winning the vote for women and to propose an official international women's day.

To honour the women who had stood up bravely against those in power, the Conference decided to hold an International Women's Day every year, with the slogan 'An 8-hour working day, equal work, protection for mothers and children'.

Why Is 8 March Celebrated, and What Does It Mean?

In the United States, in 1987, Congress declared 'March is Women's History Month in America' – so in the US, not just 8 March but every day of March is a day for women.

The United Nations designated 1975 as International Women's Year, marking the year it officially recognised 8 March as International Women's Day – a day to honour women who have fought tirelessly for independence, democracy and the right of women and children to a happy life.

Always give your deepest love to the women who carried you and gave birth to you, who cared for you, and who mean something to you. And always remember:

Women are meant to be loved!
