Gold-Covered Dishes Made Just for the World's Super-Rich

Gold has long been seen as a material for jewelry, decorative charms and the like, or even as a folk remedy. But times have changed: to serve the most luxurious meals to the world's wealthiest diners, gold can now be eaten too.

Dishes "coated in gold" are a favorite that famous restaurants put on their menus especially for their big-spending VIP guests.

Let's look at some dishes made with gold.

1. Gold-covered ice cream

This dessert has been taken to a whole new level with a shimmering layer of 23-karat gold on top. It is also ranked among the most expensive desserts in the world.

2. Cappuccino dusted with gold

The cities of the United Arab Emirates never fail to surprise with their lavish spending, and drinks are no exception. In Abu Dhabi, the country's second most populous city, cappuccino lovers can order a drink that costs 25 USD a cup, about 570,000 Vietnamese dong.

3. Gold-covered hamburger

If you think hamburgers in Europe are just cheap fast food, step into 666 Burger in New York City (USA) and try this one. The restaurant calls it the Douche Burger: it is filled with beef, cheese, BBQ sauce and caviar, and of course a sheet of gold covers the bun, making it almost too luxurious to eat.

A single burger costs between 400 USD and 700 USD, roughly 9 million to 16 million VND, compared with 3 USD for a hamburger at McDonald's.

4. Gold-wrapped cakes

To satisfy their guests' taste for luxury, top restaurants offer cupcakes, cookies and cakes lavishly wrapped in gold. These cakes are made in limited numbers, only to order, and the gold covering each one is 23 karat.

5. Gold sushi

This Japanese dish hasn't escaped the world's gold craze either. Pieces of gold wrapped around seaweed rolls filled with Norwegian salmon, foie gras or lobster are nothing new to the elite. Each piece of sushi costs diners 700 USD, about 16 million VND.

6. Gold-wrapped chocolate

In London, you can spend about 1,600 USD, around 36 million VND, to try this treat. Chocolates coated in gold or topped with gold flakes give diners a real sense of luxury.

7. Gold-sprinkled pizza

It's called the Pizza Royale 007 and was created by the famous chef Domenico Crolla. The toppings couldn't be more expensive: lobster, caviar soaked in champagne, salmon, venison and, of course, flakes of gold scattered over the top.
